Do a dream exercise with them.
Go to a conference room and ask the following:
“Who are you”
“Who are you trying to be by the time you’re done here”
This job is like getting into a car. It’s going on a roadtrip.
You’re gonna a bunch of other people in the car with you, we’re cool, it’s gonna be a fun hang, the music is good, the vibe is nice.
Ok we’re trying to get to some destination, and your job is not to be focused on the car, making the car as great as it can be. Recognize that every business, every experience is just a vehicle to get you to some other destination for yourself.
And so what is that for you?
Who are you today and who do you want to walk out as.
I start getting them pumped talking about themselves.
Usually people have a very hard time to have a vision for themselves. Yourself is more important than the company you’re working for.
That does two things:
1- They realize that I care about them as a person, and that I’m gonna help them get where they wanna go.
2- I get to see how they’re wired. I get to see what makes them tick. I get to see what they’re motivated by. So when it’s time to get great effort of them, I know what moves the needles for them.
